Mother's Day in Italy, as it is understood today, has two origins: one commercial and one religious.
The commercial one was born in the mid-1950s where, for the first time, the mayor of Bordighera, in Liguria, celebrated it in a theatre.
The religious one was commissioned in 1957 by Don Otello Migliosi, a parish priest from Tordilbetto in Umbria who wanted to celebrate the figure of the mother in her strong Christian value.
What is the official date of the party?
According to some sources the date corresponds to May 8th .
According to others, however, the festival was moved for commercial reasons to the second Sunday of May and has remained fixed at that moment ever since.

Is it always celebrated on the same day around the world?
In many European states, in the United States, in Japan, in Australia, it falls on the second Sunday of May; in San Marino it is celebrated on May 15th, in many Arab countries it is on the day of the spring equinox that motherhood is celebrated.
In the UK and Ireland it is the fourth Sunday of Lent.
